One of the most important parts of a painting is planning it out compositionally. Robh Ruppel uses large geometric shapes to block in shapes and color to plan out his pieces. He blocks in the lightest and the darkest and rearranges them to work for the composition. 

 A great example of this is found in movie story boards, where they use solid colors to quickly layout out a composition







He also uses this same technique with laying out colors, using solid areas of colors to create the composition.
